Restylane

Steven Robinson, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Board Certified Plastic Surgeon

Restylane is a great option for patients with deep facial lines, such as nasolabial folds between the mouth and nose. An FDA-approved dermal filler, Restylane is composed of hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in the human body.

This non-animal-based filler is a smooth gel made from plants. It requires no allergy testing and breaks down without a trace in the body. Best of all, Restylane results can last for six months or longer and can be repeated as desired.

Restylane can:

  • Restore volume and fullness to areas that have become wrinkled.
  • Decrease nasolabial folds.
  • Diminish lines around the lips.
  • Reduce marionette lines from the mouth to the chin.
  • Create fuller lips.
  • Improve the appearance of acne scars.
  • Diminish tear troughs under the eyes.

There are a number of injectable fillers, but Restylane is the most studied of the facial fillers available today. Because the effects are subtle and the procedure is non-surgical and non-invasive, Restylane injections are popular with both men and women.

For certain other types of wrinkles, BOTOX may be preferable. Dr. Robinson can advise you the best procedure to achieve your desired outcome.

What Happens During Restylane Injections?

One of the key advantages of Restylane is that no down time is required. The injections take a matter of minutes (depending on the number of areas you wish to treat), and you can go home immediately.

While the injections, which are done with a very fine needle, are not painful, Restylane contains lidocaine. This serves as a mild local anesthetic to make the treatment more comfortable.

Restylane Recovery

While there is no real recovery time from a Restylane treatment, you may experience some redness and irritation, including slight bruising and swelling in the injection areas, for a few days. This is usually not painful, but you can take a mild pain medication, if needed. You can also wear makeup immediately to cover any discoloration.

You will be more sensitive to sunburn after your Restylane injections, so be sure to always wear sun block when outside.

The effects of Restylane generally last at least six months and can sometimes last as long as two years. Additional treatments can often extend the length of your results.
