Body Contouring After Weight Loss

Body contouring after major weight loss reduces the excess skin and fat that is left behind from the expansion of skin, loss of fat and lack of tissue elasticity that often occurs after a major weight loss. This sagging skin commonly develops around the face, neck, upper arms, breast, abdomen, buttocks, and thighs and can make your body contour appear irregular and misshapen. If you have undergone dramatic weight loss either through diet and exercise or bariatric surgery, and you are at your optimum weight loss goal, you may be a good candidate for this surgery and may wish to consider undergoing this procedure.

The success of body contouring, whether it is done to reduce, enlarge or lift, is influenced by your age and by the size, shape and skin tone of the area to be treated. Some contouring procedures leave only small, inconspicuous scars. More noticeable scars may result when surgical removal of fat and skin is necessary to achieve your desired result. Most patients find these scars acceptable and enjoy greater self-confidence when wearing a bathing suit or form-fitting clothes.

Liposuction – Still The Most Popular Plastic Surgery Procedure

For many years liposuction has been the most frequently performed Plastic Surgery procedure on both men and women. This year is no different. Liposcution is popular for several reasons. Today, there is little recovery time required with the more modern techniques. My patients are back to work and normal activities in a matter of days. There are also no large incisions or scars for this procedure. The newer liposuction tools are very small in diameter and only small nicks in the skin are necessary.

To see if  liposction is right for you, call today for a complimentary consultation in our office, located at 4661 Sawmill Rd., Columbus. Our telephone number is (614) 326-4661. At the time of the consultation we will talk about your goals, examine the problem areas, look at before/after pictures, and discuss all options.

LIPOSUCTION TECHNIQUES AND DIFFERENCES IN PROCEDURE NAMES

Recently, many liposuction instruments have been fabricated by various companies and sold to Plastic Surgeons and even to physicians with no Plastic Surgery training whatsoever. These instruments are called by various trademarked names and marketed to physicians and the public. This has caused much confusion about liposuction, which technique should be used, and who is qualified to do liposuction. In this article I will discuss the procedure and attempt to alleviate some of this confusion. We will also discuss the names given to these instruments and their marketing.

Some of the names for the different liposuction instruments and techniques now available are: laser liposuction, vaser liposuction, smartlipo (smart liposuction), cool lipo, slimlipo, ultrasonic liposuction, and traditional tumescent liposuction. It is no wonder the public is confused. Most of these instruments accomplish the same thing, with minor variations. Unfortunately in today’s medical marketplace, non-surgeons are attempting to perform these procedures and much of the information given about how these techniques are superior to others is false. It is important to remember that these are real surgical procedures and should only be done be fully trained Plastic Surgeons. The most important aspect of your liposuction is the person doing it – this person should be a board certified Plastic Surgeon.

Laser liposuction uses a laser beam to help break up the fat cells before removing them with the liposuction instrument. This technique has been promoted to non-Plastic Surgeons as an “easier” way to do liposuction. Like other techniques, it does work and the fat removed is gone permanently. However. The laser beam produces heat and some patients have been burned by this technique. You must be sure you are in the hands of a fully trained Plastic Surgeon.

Smartlipo (smart lipo, or smart liposuction) is another form of laser liposuction. It’s name is trademarked by the company that makes the instrument and the rights to use it are sold to doctors. Again, many non-plastic surgeons have been sold this equipment and all the marketing materials that go with it. This is a legitimate technique in properly trained hands, but complications have of laser burns been reported.

Vaser liposuction ( vaserlipo ) uses ultrasonic energy to break up the fat cells before removing them with the liposuction instrument. This technique also works but the biggest disadvantage is that it requires a large, expensive machine. Slimlipo (slim lipo, slim liposuction ) is another laser liposuction that uses a slightly different wavelength of laser light. It is different enough that it can be trademarked.

Tumescent liposuction is the technique with over 20 years of safety data. This is the gold standard by which all other techniques are compared and is still the most commonly used type of liposuction. This is usually my preferred method due to its safety, permanent removal of fat cells, and no use of heat energy that could risk a burn. I have been doing liposuction for over fifteen years and I evaluate a new procedure based on its safety and if it allows me better results than traditional tumescent liposuction. To date, I have been very dissapointed with the results of these newer techniques as being only more of the same. The name is new and the marketing approach is aggressive and glitzy, but the end results are no better.

Again, the most important aspect of your liposuction is the person doing it. The name of the instrument is not nearly as important as the training of the Plastic Surgeon. We have a saying that deserves to be remembered. “Only a Pilot should fly an airplane and only a Plastic Surgeon should do Plastic Surgery.” If you would like further information, please visit my website at www.ohioplasticsurgeons.com. PLASTIC SURGERY FOR MEN

Over the years I have noticed a definite trend in my practice of more men having Plastic Surgery. There is also a pattern of which operations men are seeking and why. The most common procedure I perform on men is the eyelift. Next in popularity is the neck and chin area. Many men want that “double chin” gone and we have effective treatment options for that. Finally, I do a lot of liposuction on the abdomen and flanks (love handles) in men. All of these operations are done as an outpatient and with minimal recovery time. below I have outlined some specifics on each of these popular procedures.

Many men are coming to me with the complaint that they look older than they feel and their eyes make them look sleepy. These men are vibrant, still working and perhaps looking to advance in their careers. The eyelift is a great operation to alleviate the tired look that comes with aging eyelids. Both the upper eyelids and the lowers can be corrected. The upper eyelids usually accumulate excess skin that make them look droopy. The lower lids can develop “bags” which really make one look tired or fatigued. Both of these corrections are done under local anesthesia as an outpatient and most people can return to work within a week to 10 days.

Another common problem is fullness of the neck creating that double chin look. fortunately, for most men this can be solved with liposuction of that area. Sometimes a small amount of excess skin also needs to be removed. The nice thing about this operation is that it is not painful, requires one week or less off work, and is very long lasting. This is also done as an outpatient at a local surgery center and with an anesthesiologist giving sedation “twilight” or a light general anesthetic.

The classic problem that occurs as men enter their 30′s and 40′s is that “spare tire” of excess fat accumulating around the middle. This can be in the abdomen, the flanks, or even around to the lower back. Once it is there, this is very resistant to weight loss. For the majority, liposuction alone can correct this problem. That means only a few days off work are necessary and most get back to normal activities quickly. Liposuction results are permanent provided that you maintain a stable weight.

All of these procedures and more are being done for men. Today, there is no need for embarrassment. The best place to start is a consultation with a board certified Plastic Surgeon. There you can discuss your goals and determine which options are best for you.

And now I would like to invite you to visit my website at http://www.ohioplasticsurgeons.com where this and other Plastic Surgery questions can be explored in greater detail.

Gynecomastia Explained

Gynecomastia Explained

Gynecomastia is the abnormal enlargement of breast tissue in men. It usually starts during puberty and affects 10% of teenage boys in the United States. Sometimes this will resolve by itself but if it persist for longer than 2 years, it almost never goes away spontaneously. Studies have shown that in the vast majority of cases there is no hormone imbalence and no other associated disease processes happening. This condition can run in families (hereditary) or it can occur as an isolated case.

Gynecomastia has been shown to caues great anxiety and even depression in men and boys who suffer from this. At the very least they find it embarrassing to take off their shirt at the pool, the gym, or to participate in sports. Many avoid these activities altogether and become socially withdrawn. Fortunately, we have a plastic surgery procedure that permantly cures this condition . It is an outpatient procedure that takes about one hour and requires only a few days recovery. This procedure leaves the chest area with a normal contour and with virtually no visible scars. For more information please call us at (614) 326-4661.

“Love Handles” Are Not Lovely – We Have The Cure

The lower abdomen is an area of the body that frequently accumulates excess fat in both men and women. It has been given various names such as “love handles”, “spare tire”, or “muffin top”. Typically, this area is larger than other parts of the hips and abdomen and  simply looks out of proportion.  This particular area of fat deposition is often resistant to weight loss and excercise. If you feel this is describing you, liposuction may be the answer.

Liposuction is the best solution for this problem for several reasons. It is safe, effective, and requires little recovery time. No large scars are required and most of my patients are back at work and excercising in a few days. Ths only restriction after this procedure is that one must wear a thin compression garment under your clothes for a month. No one else can tell you are wearing it.  For more information visit my website at www.ohioplasticsurgeons.com or call us at our office in Columbus, Ohio at 614 326-4661

Liposuction – When is it indicated and when is it not?

Liposuction is one of the most popular surgical procedures done today. When performed by a qualified Plastic Surgeon it is safe, very effective and requires little recovery time off work.  Maybe you have been thinking about this, but how do you know if you are a good candidate for this procedure?  Will liposuction meet your expectations and allow you to return to normal activities quickly?  Is it the right procedure for you or would another option be better?  The only way to know for sure is to set up a consultation in the office of a board certified Plastic Surgeon.

The ideal candidate for liposuction is a person (male or female) who is active, healthy, and near normal body weight. They may have a few areas of stubborn fat deposits that just have not gone away with diet and excercise. Liposuction alone is very effective at treating this problem. Another person who benefits from liposuction may be someone who is overweight, but not obese, and just wants certain areas to be smaller. These operations are done as an outpatient and for most people require only a few days off work.

People who may not benefit from liposuction alone are those who have excess skin in the areas to be treated.  Many times this skin cannot contract enough to leave a cosmetically acceptable appearance.  Some sort of  “lift” or tummy tuck may be needed.  This is why it is crucial that you consult with a fully trained Plastic Surgeon so that all your areas of concern can be fully evaluated and all your options explained.  For more information on this and other procedures visit my website at www.ohioplasticsurgeons.com or call 614  326-4661.
