Gynecomastia, Or Male Breast Enlargement, Can Be Effectively Treated by a Qualified Plastic Surgeon

Gynecomastia is a condition of male breast enlargement that occurs in 10 percent of boys around the time of puberty. This problem is characterized by abnormal enlargement of the glandular tissue around the nipple and can become quite large and painful. Usually there is no specific identifiable cause for this condition but it can run in families. In addition, a few medications like Tagamet and certain anti-seizure drugs have been shown to cause it. In about half of the boys who develop this, it will resolve by itself within 2 years of its appearance. If the condition does not resolve within 2 years it most likely will not go away spontaneously and requires surgical intervention.

Fortunately, some Plastic Surgeons are trained in a technique that solves this problem and leaves virtually no visible scars. The procedure is done through a small incision in the lower border of the areola, which is the dark skin around the nipple. Through this incision the glandular tissue is removed and liposuction is done to smooth and sculp the chest wall. This allows muscle definition of the underlying pectoralis muscle to show. This procedure is not very painful and is done as an outpatient. That means the person goes home the same day as the procedure. I frequently perform this operation under a light general anesthetic or “twilight” anesthesia where the patient is somewhat awake. In addition, this operation requires little down time. I expect my patients to be back at work and back in the gym working out within one week or less.

While this is a wonderful operation that helps many men and boys rid themselves of an embarrassing problem, it should only be performed by a board certified Plastic Surgeon. In addition this should be done in an accredited outpatient surgery center. In such surgery centers an anesthesiologist will attend to your comfort while the surgeon concentrates on the results. This is the safest and most effective way to have this procedure. One should ask his surgeon how many of these operations he or she has performed and what facility they use. You should feel comfortable with your surgeon after the consultation and do not be afraid to seek a second opinion if you are not sure.

Body Contouring After Weight Loss

Body contouring after major weight loss reduces the excess skin and fat that is left behind from the expansion of skin, loss of fat and lack of tissue elasticity that often occurs after a major weight loss. This sagging skin commonly develops around the face, neck, upper arms, breast, abdomen, buttocks, and thighs and can make your body contour appear irregular and misshapen. If you have undergone dramatic weight loss either through diet and exercise or bariatric surgery, and you are at your optimum weight loss goal, you may be a good candidate for this surgery and may wish to consider undergoing this procedure.

The success of body contouring, whether it is done to reduce, enlarge or lift, is influenced by your age and by the size, shape and skin tone of the area to be treated. Some contouring procedures leave only small, inconspicuous scars. More noticeable scars may result when surgical removal of fat and skin is necessary to achieve your desired result. Most patients find these scars acceptable and enjoy greater self-confidence when wearing a bathing suit or form-fitting clothes.

PLASTIC SURGERY FOR MEN

Over the years I have noticed a definite trend in my practice of more men having Plastic Surgery. There is also a pattern of which operations men are seeking and why. The most common procedure I perform on men is the eyelift. Next in popularity is the neck and chin area. Many men want that “double chin” gone and we have effective treatment options for that. Finally, I do a lot of liposuction on the abdomen and flanks (love handles) in men. All of these operations are done as an outpatient and with minimal recovery time. below I have outlined some specifics on each of these popular procedures.

Many men are coming to me with the complaint that they look older than they feel and their eyes make them look sleepy. These men are vibrant, still working and perhaps looking to advance in their careers. The eyelift is a great operation to alleviate the tired look that comes with aging eyelids. Both the upper eyelids and the lowers can be corrected. The upper eyelids usually accumulate excess skin that make them look droopy. The lower lids can develop “bags” which really make one look tired or fatigued. Both of these corrections are done under local anesthesia as an outpatient and most people can return to work within a week to 10 days.

Another common problem is fullness of the neck creating that double chin look. fortunately, for most men this can be solved with liposuction of that area. Sometimes a small amount of excess skin also needs to be removed. The nice thing about this operation is that it is not painful, requires one week or less off work, and is very long lasting. This is also done as an outpatient at a local surgery center and with an anesthesiologist giving sedation “twilight” or a light general anesthetic.

The classic problem that occurs as men enter their 30′s and 40′s is that “spare tire” of excess fat accumulating around the middle. This can be in the abdomen, the flanks, or even around to the lower back. Once it is there, this is very resistant to weight loss. For the majority, liposuction alone can correct this problem. That means only a few days off work are necessary and most get back to normal activities quickly. Liposuction results are permanent provided that you maintain a stable weight.

All of these procedures and more are being done for men. Today, there is no need for embarrassment. The best place to start is a consultation with a board certified Plastic Surgeon. There you can discuss your goals and determine which options are best for you.
