Breast reconstruction is a complex process that involves reconstructing the breast mound and the nipple. Breast reconstruction surgery is usually performed in stages, and no two surgeries are the same. Breast implants may need to be used, or in some cases, your own tissue may be sufficient to restore the size and shape of your breasts.

What Happens During Breast Reconstruction Surgery?

Breast reconstruction is highly individualized, so Dr. Robinson will discuss the specifics of your case with you in detail. Various techniques may be employed to ensure that your breasts look as natural as possible. Dr. Robinson will do everything he can to restore your breasts to their former appearance as closely as possible.

The techniques used may involve a balloon expander that stretches the skin and muscles over a period of time to make space for an implant. Other techniques are called flap reconstruction and TRAM (transverse rectus abdominus muscle). In these cases, tissue from other parts of the body may be used to reconstruct the breasts. When tissue from the upper back is used, for example, it is called a latissimus dorsi flap, but in this case, an implant is usually also necessary.

Bilateral reconstruction is the name for reconstruction of both breasts. This is often preferable in order to restore symmetry, helping the breasts to match one another as much as possible.
