Patients who have successfully undergone significant weight loss or weight loss surgery (post bariatric surgery) are often faced with an unintended side effect: substantial amounts of loose, sagging skin on their bodies.
Not only is this excess skin unappealing from an aesthetic point of view, but it can also have serious health consequences. Skin infections can result, and it can impair the patient’s ability to exercise.
Surgery to remove excess skin can eliminate these health concerns and restore a pleasing appearance. Excess skin is most commonly removed from:
The procedure for the arms is often called an arm lift or brachioplasty. It is also often performed on older women who have not lost a significant amount of weight but who have experienced sagging skin under the upper arms as a result of the aging process.
Liposuction may be performed at the same time to remove excess fat as well. The combination of these procedures is sometimes called a body lift or body sculpting. Excess skin removal may also be performed as part of a tummy tuck.
The excess skin is removed, and the remaining skin is tightened and draped over the muscle and other tissue. The skin is then stitched into place. Dr. Robinson always attempts to reduce the size of your incisions and tries to place them where they will remain hidden under your clothing if at all possible.
Depending upon the amount of skin that will be removed, your procedure may be performed as an outpatient surgery. The length of time of your surgery will vary based on the number of areas that need to be addressed. Dr. Robinson always conducts excess skin removal in a hospital or fully accredited surgical facility with a board certified Anesthesiologist present to ensure your comfort.
This surgery is conducted under a general anesthetic and may require a night or two in the hospital in some cases.
Your recovery time will depend upon the extent of skin that has been removed. If you have also had weight loss surgery or liposuction, your recovery period may be extended. You may also need to wear compression garments for a period of time.
Some bruising, inflammation, and soreness is to be expected after excess skin removal, especially if you are having skin removed from more than one area of the body. You will be given medications to manage any post-surgical pain that you experience.
Dr. Robinson will give you complete details as to what you can expect after your surgery, including care instructions and a schedule of post-surgical examinations.
At your consultation, Dr. Robinson will talk with you about what to expect from your excess skin removal surgery. You will also see excess skin removal before and after photos of others who have had the surgery. Dr. Robinson will then take pictures of you to serve as your “before pictures”. After your recovery period, he will take “after pictures” and give you both sets of photos. It can be very exciting and dramatic to compare the differences in the way your body looks. Of course, we understand the confidential nature of this surgery, so your photos will not be shared with anyone else unless you consent.
