medical tourism is a bad idea because of complications, no follow-up care, and no way to determine what standards these procedures are performed under.

A recent trend has emerged of people from the United States travelling to foreign countries for Plastic Surgery procedures. Most of these are third world countries offering a bargain price for surgery. However, there are real risks with this aproach. I am seeing more patients in my practice who come in with serious complications after such surgical misadventures. They have been sent back home with no follow-up appointments and no instructions of what to do if there is a problem.

Many patients seeking to save money end up spending alot more back home taking care of the complications, most of which could have been avoided by haveing the procedures done here. The hospitals in these third world countries do not have to meet the same standards as our own and infection rates are much higher in certain parts of the World. In addition, there is no way to be sure of a surgeon’s training and experience when going to a foreign country. There are few regulations and no legal remedies if something goes wrong.

My advise is to avoid surgery of any kind outside of the United States unless it is an emergency while travelling. Too many Americans are having unnecessary complications and harm from this surgical vacation concept. Do yourself a favor and stay here for surgery, vacation afterwards.

Liposuction is confusiong with many new instrument names being marketed to the public. Here we will discuss these newer techn iques.

Recently, many liposuction instruments have been fabricated by various companies and sold to Plastic Surgeons and even to physicians with no Plastic Surgery training whatsoever. These instruments are called by various trademarked names and marketed to physicians and the public. This has caused much confusion about liposuction, which technique should be used, and who is qualified to do liposuction. In this article I will discuss the procedure and attempt to alleviate some of this confusion. We will also discuss the names given to these instruments and their marketing.

Some of the names for the different liposuction instruments and techniques now available are: laser liposuction, vaser liposuction, smartlipo (smart liposuction), cool lipo, slimlipo, ultrasonic liposuction, and traditional tumescent liposuction. It is no wonder the public is confused. Most of these instruments accomplish the same thing, with minor variations. Unfortunately in today’s medical marketplace, non-surgeons are attempting to perform these procedures and much of the information given about how these techniques are superior to others is false. It is important to remember that these are real surgical procedures and should only be done be fully trained Plastic Surgeons. The most important aspect of your liposuction is the person doing it – this person should be a board certified Plastic Surgeon.

Laser liposuction uses a laser beam to help break up the fat cells before removing them with the liposuction instrument. This technique has been promoted to non-Plastic Surgeons as an “easier” way to do liposuction. Like other techniques, it does work and the fat removed is gone permanently. However. The laser beam produces heat and some patients have been burned by this technique. You must be sure you are in the hands of a fully trained Plastic Surgeon.

Smartlipo (smart lipo, or smart liposuction) is another form of laser liposuction. It’s name is trademarked by the company that makes the instrument and the rights to use it are sold to doctors. Again, many non-plastic surgeons have been sold this equipment and all the marketing materials that go with it. This is a legitimate technique in properly trained hands, but complications have of laser burns been reported.

Vaser liposuction ( vaserlipo ) uses ultrasonic energy to break up the fat cells before removing them with the liposuction instrument. This technique also works but the biggest disadvantage is that it requires a large, expensive machine. Slimlipo (slim lipo, slim liposuction ) is another laser liposuction that uses a slightly different wavelength of laser light. It is different enough that it can be trademarked.

Tumescent liposuction is the technique with over 20 years of safety data. This is the gold standard by which all other techniques are compared and is still the most commonly used type of liposuction. This is usually my preferred method due to its safety, permanent removal of fat cells, and no use of heat energy that could risk a burn. I have been doing liposuction for over fifteen years and I evaluate a new procedure based on its safety and if it allows me better results than traditional tumescent liposuction. To date, I have been very dissapointed with the results of these newer techniques as being only more of the same. The name is new and the marketing approach is aggressive and glitzy, but the end results are no better.

Again, the most important aspect of your liposuction is the person doing it. The name of the instrument is not nearly as important as the training of the Plastic Surgeon. We have a saying that deserves to be remembered. “Only a Pilot should fly an airplane and only a Plastic Surgeon should do Plastic Surgery.” If you would like further information, please visit my website at www.ohioplasticsurgeons.com. There you can ask me questions directly by email and I will personally and confidentially answer them. You may also call us at (614) 326-4661 with any other questions you may have.

PLastic surgery for men is a growing segment of the overall cosmetic surgery market. Liposuction, gynecomastia treatment, facelift, eyelifts and many other procedures are gaining popluarity in the men's marketplace.

Over the years I have noticed a definite trend in my practice of more men having Plastic Surgery. There is also a pattern of which operations men are seeking and why. The most common procedure I perform on men is the eyelift. Next in popularity is the neck and chin area. Many men want that “double chin” gone and we have effective treatment options for that. Finally, I do a lot of liposuction on the abdomen and flanks (love handles) in men. All of these operations are done as an outpatient and with minimal recovery time. below I have outlined some specifics on each of these popular procedures.

Many men are coming to me with the complaint that they look older than they feel and their eyes make them look sleepy. These men are vibrant, still working and perhaps looking to advance in their careers. The eyelift is a great operation to alleviate the tired look that comes with aging eyelids. Both the upper eyelids and the lowers can be corrected. The upper eyelids usually accumulate excess skin that make them look droopy. The lower lids can develop “bags” which really make one look tired or fatigued. Both of these corrections are done under local anesthesia as an outpatient and most people can return to work within a week to 10 days.

Another common problem is fullness of the neck creating that double chin look. fortunately, for most men this can be solved with liposuction of that area. Sometimes a small amount of excess skin also needs to be removed. The nice thing about this operation is that it is not painful, requires one week or less off work, and is very long lasting. This is also done as an outpatient at a local surgery center and with an anesthesiologist giving sedation “twilight” or a light general anesthetic.

The classic problem that occurs as men enter their 30’s and 40’s is that “spare tire” of excess fat accumulating around the middle. This can be in the abdomen, the flanks, or even around to the lower back. Once it is there, this is very resistant to weight loss. For the majority, liposuction alone can correct this problem. That means only a few days off work are necessary and most get back to normal activities quickly. Liposuction results are permanent provided that you maintain a stable weight.

All of these procedures and more are being done for men. Today, there is no need for embarrassment. The best place to start is a consultation with a board certified Plastic Surgeon. There you can discuss your goals and determine which options are best for you.

And now I would like to invite you to visit my website at http://www.ohioplasticsurgeons.com where this and other Plastic Surgery questions can be explored in greater detail.

You may also email me directly at Stevenrobinsonmd@gmail.com with your individual question. I will personally answer your questions and all emails are kept in strict confidence.

To find a qualified Plastic usrgeon always make sure the person has completed a residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery and is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery

A Plastic Surgeon is very strictly defined as a person who has a medical degree, has completed an accredited residency in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and has passed board examinations given by The American Board of Plastic Surgery. Unfortunately, many non-plastic surgeons are trying to increase their income by offering Plastic Surgery procedures to their patients. They may advertise “credentials” which sound similar to those used by Plastic Surgeons. So how can you tell the difference?

To begin, one should look at the educational background of the doctor. His or her residency training program should be in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery rather than Dermatology, Otolaryngology (ENT) or Internal Medicine. Only by training in one of these very specialized and rigorous Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery programs can a physician obtain the knowledge base and skill set necessary to function as a Plastic Surgeon. If you do not see the educational background in the physicians literature- just ask. I don’t mind at all when a patient inquires about my training. I am very proud of my extensive training and am happy to talk about it.

Another very important factor in your choice of a Plastic Surgeon must be board certification. Only through the very difficult certification process can you be sure that your surgeon has passed all the necessary prerequisites. While this does not guarantee a perfect surgical result. it gives you the best chance to have your expectations safely met. The ONLY recognized Board in the United States able to certify Plastic Surgeons is The American Board of Plastic Surgery. No other certification is relevant. There are many non-recognized groups who have created their own “boards” with names like The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, The American Board of Facial Plastic Surgery, and The American Board of Laser Surgery. These are not the same thing. Don’t be fooled.

Finally, talk with friends and family about their experiences with their Plastic Surgeon. This, however, is not enough. You have to talk face-to-face with the surgeon at length about your goals. You should feel comfortable with your surgeon and have confidence in his or her ability. Ask how often they perform the procedures you are considering and how many they have done in their career. Remember, a little gray hair on your surgeon is probably a good thing – experience is a wonderful teacher.

Gynecomastia is the abnormal enlargement of breast tissue in men. This usually begins at the time of puberty and affects 10% of teenage boys. Some of these will resolve by themselve, but if it persists for over 2 years, it will not go away spontaneously. Studies have shown that in the vast majority of cases there is no hormone imbalence or other diesease process happening. This is something that can run in families (hereditary) or you may be the only one in your family to have it.

Gynecomastia has been shown to cause great anxiety and even depression in boys and men who suffer from this. At the very least they find it embarrassing to take off their shirt at the gym, the pool, or for sports. Many refrain from these activities altogether and can even become socially withdrawn. Fortunately, we have a procedure that permanently cures this condition in about one hour. This is done as an outpatient and requires only a few days recovery time. Please call us for details at (614) 326-4661.
